This album, labelled Early Argentina, is a miscellaneous collection of photos that are not organized by date nor place; and, several of its photos appear in other albums. It contains photos taken at the family estancias (in Córdoba, Chaco, & Santa Fé) and summer homes in The Córdoba Hills (Sierras de Córdoba), in particular at “Cruz Grande”. Based on the album’s content and organization, we believe it was created by Marjorie.
The photos are of various sizes and are pasted in at several per page with clippings of others filling empty spaces. We skipped most of the clippings because the full photo from which each was taken appears elsewhere in this or another of John’s albums. For reference purposes, we numbered each photo with the album prefixr (Alb.2), page number, and a letter code. PLEASE send us any information and corrections to any of the photos!
Dates: We estimated the year of each photo by content, ages of children were a particularly useful guide. When we had nothing to go by, we put “ca.1900's” for any year between 1898 & 1912.
Names in titles to photos: People – names without surnames are members of the extended Benitz family. Place Names: estancias (ranches) and summer-homes are not prefixed with ‘Ea.’ nor in quotes. “Cruz Grande” is the name of a river, a locale, and of John’s summer home. Cruz Chica, Cruz Grande, and Los Cocos are locales north of La Cumbre strung along the road at the foot of the hills. For more about the people and places, see our: Reference Pages of Names.
