Charles Richards (1799-1868) - Last will & testament - 24 April, 1868

Charles Richards’ made his last will in Falmouth, Cornwall, on March 17, 1868, he died on March 21, and the will was registered on April 24.  He named his widow (Maria Adelaide Richards) as the executrix (replacing his son William).  His estate (valued at less then £600) went to his widow.  Upon her death, it was to be shared equally between his four children, William Henry, Isabel Maria, Corina Dalila, and Julia Maria.  In the event that one of the children should die, that share was to be distributed equally to the remaining children.  Witnesses were a ship builder, a lawyer for Lloyds, and an accountant.

In 1913, Malcolm S. King was listed as a partner in the Brazilian import company: King, Ferreira & Cia. in Santos.  The following is a translation, by Carlos Richards, of that listing.

Impressions of Brazil in the 20th Century


King, Ferreira & Co. – This well-known hardware import business was founded in 1860 with the name of Cassels, Causer & Cia.  In 1865, it became the W. R. Cassels & Co., and took its current title in 1900.

The current partners are Messrs. Agostinho Joaquim Ferreira, Antonio Joaquim Ferreira and Malcolm S. King, the latter residing in England.  This firm, which has its warehouse at Rua 1º de Março, 19, imports all kinds of iron, oils, varnishes, paints, machinery, tools, rugs and oils.

King, Ferreira & Co. are the sole agents in Brazil for J. C. Ayre & Co., Lowell, U.S.A., medicinal drugs; Rumford Chemical Works, U.S.A., medicinal drugs; Fellows Medical Manufacturing Co., U.S.A., medicinal drugs; and the Vavoline Oil Co., Lubricating oils.  The firm’s business is done wholesale in all Brazil, having representatives in the main centers.

Mr. Agostinho Joaquim Ferreira is of Portuguese nationality, has been in Brazil since 1875, and entered as an employee of this firm of which he is now head.  Mr. Antonio Joaquim Ferreira, also Portuguese, has been a partner in the firm since 1900.  Mr. Malcolm S. King, English and son of one of the former partners of the firm, has been a partner since 1900.
