This is the collection of all William’s documents or that pertain to him.
Vital Documents — Birth and marriage records of William and Josephine, as well as William’s list of their children.
Citizenship papers — William’s certificate of Mexican citizenship, US citizenship documents, and US passport application.
Civil Records — US census and tax records in which William and Josephine appear: at Fort Ross and in Oakland.
Contracts — His real-estate purchases & sales, and mining contracts in California were registered with the county recorders. We have researched those registered in Sonoma and Alameda counties. We also have his purchase of estancia “La California” in Argentina.
Court Cases — The court records of cases in which William participated: the raid on Fort Ross in 1845, and the US Supreme Court Land Claims court in 1850’s regarding Rancho New Breisgau & Rancho Hermann. We are missing some records, including the Muldrew suit. [Note: We placed “Court Cases“ as a “Print” item (see above menu) because most are available in print, one or two are described in newspapers.]
Letters — All letters sent or received by William.
Tales — Family tales & anecdotes about William & Josephine.
