Photo Album Nº 7
California, Camps, & Hills

Kolmer Farm, Estancias, and Summer Homes

This album, labelled Misc. Fort Ross, Cordoba Hills, etc., contains photos of Timber Cove, California, when John's mother (Josephine Kolmer-Benitz) visited in 1899.  Most of the other photos were taken by John E. Benitz (JEBz). That many of the photos have duplicates in other albums, the use of photo clippings, and the manner in which the photos are arranged, suggest the album may have been assembled to Marjorie.

The notes and labels in pencil were apparently added much later and not by Marjorie: Jo (Benitz-Webster) is identified as “Aunt Jo”.  We concluded the notes were most probably added by Marjorie’s daughter-in-law Aphra Peard, wife of son John.  She misidentified some places (e.g. as “La California” on page 9) and had trouble distiguishing between the daughters of John & Josephine Schreiber (so do we).

Dates:  Where we were unable to determine a date or year, we put “ca.1900s”.
Terms: Camp=Land; Ea.=Estancia=Ranch
Abbreviations: Bz-Benitz, Mc-Macintosh, Sc-Schreiber, St-Storey

We are enormously grateful to John C. Benitz for making this album available to us.
