John's Diary Notes
1911 & 1912

(ages: 51 & 52 years)

The notes are written on scraps of paper and two well worn pages that have been folded into quarters.  The notes on the scraps seem to be details of what was recorded in his 1904-1911 diary, which suggests a reason for the two pages.  Well worn, folded in quarters as if to fit in a shirt pocket, it is possible these pages contain notes made for inclusion in a diary note book that has since been lost.

Background photo: The corrales & casco at “Los Algarrobos” (croped, the original photo is much wider — see ‘Photos’).  John took this scene facing east from atop a windmill.  This is the second of two versions.  It has horses in the foreground and by the presence of the two motor cars it was taken no earlier than 1910.  The first version of this photo has cattle in the foreground and was taken before the 2-storey galpón (white barn) was built in 1908.

Transcription Notes: We have adapted the layout of his notes as best we could for this medium;  otherwise, we have maintained his writing style, spelling (allowing for scribbled writing), and sprinkling of Spanish, which we have either translated [shown between square brackets] and / or have explained in our Spanglish Glossary of Argentine camp terminology.

All monetary transactions, unless otherwise noted, are in Argentine pesos moneda nacional, often denoted with a $ sign: $1 m/n in 1905 is approx. 11.70 USD in 2000.  All measurements are metric (metres, hectares, litres, and kilograms).

To follow along, we recommend you open and have available our Reference Pages — Names (people & places, including maps), Spanglish Glossary, and Measures (length, area, weights, volumes, currency).
