This album, labelled Bermejo Palmares, includes one photo taken at estancia “Los Palmares” (ca.1902); we believe the rest were all taken ca.1912 during a visit by John and Marjorie Benitz to estancia “El Bermejo” and Resistencia, the capital of the Chaco province. The photos of stands of palm trees could have been taken at either Los Palmares or El Bermejo; however, we believe it more likely to be El Bermejo.
Except for the photos of Resistencia, the photos were not labelled. They are arranged in the album at two per page. We numbered each photo with the album prefix (Alb.1), page number, and “a” or “b”.
Ea. “El Bermejo”: Estancia is located in Chaco province (a national territory in the early 1900’s); John bought it for The Bermejo Estancia Co. Ltd. in 1911 and oversaw its management. It was 25,000 hectares (10 square leagues) in size, shaped like an inverted "T", the vertical leg (5 km wide along the Rio Bermejo) went south 10km to join a 10 x 20 km. east-west cross-piece. The town of Zapallar (today: Gral. J. de San Martin) was at its SW corner. Cattle breeding and logging were its principle activities. The logging of red quebracho for its tannin was very profitable — until the trees gave out (they take a few hundred years to grow logs the sizes shown).
Ea. “Los Palmares”: Estancia managed by Alfred Benitz for the family (1890-ca.1900), he bought it in 1904. About eight leagues in size, it was in northern Santa Fé province, west of Calchaquí between the Calchaquí and Salado rivers.
