Photo Album Nº 7
California, Camps, & Hills

Kolmer Farm, Estancias, and Summer Homes

Part 1 (pages  1-26) - this page
Part 2 (pages 27-52) - click here

This album, labelled Misc. Fort Ross, Cordoba Hills, etc., includes photos of Timber Cove and Fort Ross (California, USA) taken during Josephine Kolmer-Benitz’s visit in 1899.  Apart from those, most if not all other photos were taken by John E. Benitz.  Many have duplicates in his other albums.  The many photo clippings and the manner in which the photos are arranged suggest the album was assembled by Marjorie, John’s wife.

Notes:

  1. Separate Images: We did not create separate images of (i) a few very low quality photos, (ii) most unlabelled photos of sea ports, and (iii) many small clippings (of children in particular) taken from photos that exist elsewhere in John’s albums.
  2. California, 1899: The photos of Josephine Kolmer/Benitz's visit to Timber Cove & Olompali were scattered on several pages; we placed them together & first.
  3. Labels: Written in pencil they were probably added later, most likely by John & Marjorie’s daughter-in-law Aphra Peard, wife of son John (John jr.).  Who ever it was occassionally misidentified people & places familiar to John & Marjorie:
Schreiber nieces: The daughters of Josephine Benitz & John Schreiber - for their names, see the Schreiber family photos on pages 49 & 50 of this album.
Waterfalls: Photos 12a, 13a, & 46b are of the Seventy-Foot falls on the Cruz Grande river at the eastern end of Alfred A. Benitz’s ‘El Rincon’ property.
Photos 1b, 10a, 19d, 38b, 38c, & 40b are all of the same falls and are labelled as either Huerta Grande or Huerta Mala. — Huerta Grande is an area in the hills above Cruz Chica (between La Cumbre & Cruz Grande); Huerta Mala is an area east of Mina Clavero next to Uritorco (the highest peak in the Sierras Chicas).  We have not found modern photos of the same waterfalls.
  4. Dates:  Where we were unable to determine a date or year, we put ca.1900 - i.e. between 1895 and 1905.
  5. Terms: Camp=Land;  Ea.=Estancia=Ranch;  Ao.=Arroyo=Creek/River;  Quebrada=Gorge or narrow valley.
  6.     Chaco=The climatic region which includes north ⅓ of Santa Fé prov., & all of Chaco & Formosa provinces.
  7. Abbreviations:  Bz:Benitz, KBz:Kolmer-Benitz, Mc:Macintosh, Sc:Schreiber, St:Storey

We are enormously grateful to John C. Benitz for making this album available to us.
