This album is labelled Early Camp – 35 of the 40 photos in the album were taken by John at Estancia “Los Algarrobos”. The other 5 were all taken at or near “Cruz Grande”, John & Marjorie’s summer home in “The Hills” (Sierras Chicas de Córdoba).
The photos are large; the album has one framed space per page. We have arranged the photos at two per row. For reference purposes, we identify each photo with the album prefix (Alb.4) and a sequential number. PLEASE send us any information and corrections to any of the photos!
Dates: Some of the photos are dated. For the rest, we estimated the year of each photo by its content; presence of trees and their height, and the ages of children were particularly useful. We used John’s early panoramic photos of “Los Algarrobos” as a guide to tree growth and construction. When we had nothing to go by, we put “ca.1900's” for any year between 1898 & 1912, very likely between 1900 & 1906.
Names in titles to photos: People – names without surnames are members of the Benitz family. Place Names: estancias (ranches) and summer-homes are not prefixed with ‘Ea.’ nor in quotes. “Cruz Grande” is the name of a river, a locale, and of John’s summer home. Cruz Chica, Cruz Grande, and Los Cocos are locales north of La Cumbre strung along the road at the foot of the hills (Sierras Chicas de Córdoba). For more about the people and places, see our: Reference Pages of Names.
JBS: information (date, title, names) found for same photo in a Josephine Benitz-Schreiber album.
We
are enormously grateful to John C. Benitz for making this album available to us.
