Soon after Howard died (15
Dec., 1951), Jo sold “La Gloria” and bought “Chañar Yacu” in the
Las Rabonas area of Nono, a (then) remote village west of the Sierras Grandes (Córdoba prov.).
It included a small plot of land with fields in which to keep horses (surprise!). There was also
a small community of English-speaking families with whom to socialise. A few years later, Tommy
& Elsie (Jo’s sister) sold their estancia “El Venado” and
bought the house next to Jo’s. Chañar Yacu (Quichua) – Agua del Chañar / Water from the chañar. The chañar is a thorny shrub / small tree of the Leuminosae family, common in central Argentina; bears sweet edible berries (see: Geoffraea decoritans). |

SUMMER CAMPING From about 1954 to about 1967, Bijou (Jo) would take her grandchildren and their friends camping on a several day ride to the top of the Sierras Grandes. (Note: We have omitted most photos becasue they include people living today who can be recognised.) |

Jo enjoyed carving wood. Her carvings always included horses.
She gave this table to Malcolm & Gertie Benitz before 1960.
